India depart for Caribbean via Dubai after last-minute change

GulfNews Dubai: The Indian national football team left for their friendly tour to the Caribbean via Dubai yesterday.

Amid security concerns, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) changed the stop-over point, which was originally London.

But the UK capital's problems with rioting meant a last-minute change was needed.

Kushal Das, AIFF general secretary, said: "It's great the tour is happening. We wish the team the very best for the event."
National team coach Armando Coalco lauded the AIFF for getting the tour arranged.

"I must thank the administration of the AIFF," he said. "Getting alternative travel arrangements for so many at the 11th hour is never an easy task."

A heavy downpour robbed the team of a practice session on Friday afternoon — the players making do with gym and pool sessions.

"This side has huge potential and needs to be groomed. It's necessary to expose them to play against stronger sides. I have never seen national team players playing so well," Colaco said.

Striker Sunil Chhetri, who has been nominated for the Arjuna Award, said everyone is raring to go. "It's not every day that one gets to play higher-ranked sides."

The team is slated to play three friendlies on the tour, starting with a match against St Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday.
