India 4-0 Afghanistan: The Men In Blue Successfully Defend Their SAFF Championship Title

Savio Medeira’s side won their sixth SAFF Championship title in a game where the referee stole all the headlines.

India comprehensively defeated ten-man Afghanistan 4-0 in the finals of the SAFF Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi with referee Sukhbir Singh being at the epicenter of events.
The defending champions came alive only in the final 20 minutes after Afghanistan’s Hameedullah Yousefzari was sent-off under questionable circumstances.

A penalty from Sunil Chhetri and goals from Clifford Miranda, Jeje Lalpekhlua, Sushil Singh sealed the victory for the Indians.

The two coaches named an unchanged line-up from the one that started in the semi-finals.
It was Afghanistan who started on a brighter note as the very first minute needed a last ditch clearance from Gouramangi Moirangthem after Anthony Pereira gave away the ball and Balal Arezou was through.
The next minute it was Arezou again as he picked up a ball in the second minute from Ghulam Hoddein and his shot from the top of the box was stopped by Karanjit Singh.

The Men in Blue were finding it difficult to find their feet as they failed to stitch together a couple of passes inside the opposition half.

Gouramangi couldn’t keep pace with Arezou who sent in a ball across the face of the goal which Sanjar Ahmadi just about missed by a yard or so.

Around the half way mark of the first half, Yousef Mahsriqi released Arezou in the space between Gouramangi and Mahesh Gawli and the Afghan number nine’s shot was blocked by Karanjit once again.
India’s first real foray forward was when Climax Lawrence’s chip found Clifford Miranda get behind the Afghan defence but the Dempo winger couldn’t control the ball well.

Savio Medeira’s side were second best for most of the first half and couldn’t deal with the pace of their opposition who interestingly had played 120 minutes just a day before.

After the break, India looked the keep the ball with Climax being the chief instigator as he found Anthony Pereira on the right whose cross saw Jeje’s header go over the bar.

Afghan were finding it difficult to keep up the tempo of the first session and looked content to hit on the counter, which were restricted to a few.

It was around the hour mark that Jeje was allegedly brought down by Faisal Safa inside the box and referee Sukhbir Singh awarded a soft penalty to India. In the aftermath, goalkeeper Hameedullah Yousufzari was given marching orders for pushing the referee.

Chhetri scored from the ensuring spot-kick but had to retake it due to intrusion from Syed Rahim Nabi inside the box. The India number 11 sent the substitute Bashir Ahmad Darman, after winger Ghulam Hoddein had to be sacrificed, the wrong way to help side surge ahead.

With a man down Afghanistan were always susceptible to concede more goals with Faisal Safa receiving treatment on the sidelines, Chhetri played Miranda who took a shot from his unfavoured right foot into the far side of the goal.

Chhetri ran with the ball from the left and laid the ball across for Jeje who from his second touch slotted the ball home.

Substitute Sushil Singh scored a gem of a goal as he scored a goal with the final kick of the match.
That goal turned out to be the last piece of action in the game as the referee blew the final whistle to send the Indian fans, staff and players into delirium as they celebrated another SAFF Championship triumph

MATCH REPORT

The SAFF Championship 2011 final kicked-off with an on-fire Afghan team against hosts India in front of a fanatic crowd at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi.

Afghan striker Balal Arezou had the first scoring opportunity of the match in the 2nd minute. Arezou finished off a good run down the right centre-half with a powerful shot on target. But India keeper Karanjit Singh had no difficulties to save the shot and denied Afghanistan an early lead.

The Indian team needed around ten minutes before they slowly started to find their way into the match.
India registered their first chance of the match in the 16th minute, when Haroon Fakhrudin brought down Jeje Lalpekhlua in a dangerous position. Anthony Pereira took the resulting freekick, but his shot went over the crossbar.

Afghanistan proved to be the tough opponent they promised to be and they almost took the lead in the 24th minute. New York Red Bulls player Mohammad Yusef Mashriqi delivered a well-timed through ball to Balal Arezou and the quick striker left India defenders Mahesh Gawli and Gouramangi Moirangthem Singh behind him. Arezou looked certain to score, but Karanjit kept the Indian team in the game with a superb save.
The all-red Afghanistan team dominated the first half and India were kept away from the Afghan box for most of the time.

Anthony Pereira managed to deliver a cross into the Afghan danger area in the 30th minute, but India star striker Sunil Chhetri failed to control the ball and he was quickly dispossessed by Haroon Fakhrudin.
India coach Savio Medeira didn’t look like a happy man, when both teams left the pitch at the end of the first session. Savio knew that his team would need to pull up their socks in the second half and that the match could be decided by just one mistake.

And it seemed like Savio found the right words in the locker room. India took the initiative and young striker Jeje Lalpekhlua tested Afghan keeper Hameedullag Yousufzai with a great shot on target in the 46th minute. But Yousufzai saved Jeje’s attempt and the score remained 0-0.

India increased the pace and Jeje had another chance to give the defending champions the lead just four minutes after his first chance. But Jeje’s header off a Anthony Pereira cross went well wide.
The Indian midfield looked composed in the second half and they managed to dispossess Afghanistan again and again.

The match got a decisive turn around, when Jeje Lalpekhlua was brought in the Afghan box by a defender. India was correctly awarded a penalty and Afghan keeper Hameedullag Yousufzai was sent off for abusive behaviour against referee Sukhbir Singh from Singapore.

The red card caused a turmoil amongst the Afghan players and officials and it took several minutes, before the match continued.

Sunil Chhetri took the penalty and scored, but he had to repeat the shot once again. The Indian star striker kept calm and cool and gave India the lead with his second penalty kick in the 71st minute.

Sunil entered the history books of the SAFF Championship with his seventh goal of the competition. The Delhi boy has overtaken former India star striker I.M. Vijayan in the the all-time list of the most goals scored in a single SAFF Championship. Vijayan, popularly nicknamed “The Black Pearl” of Indian football, scored six goals in the 1997 edition of the tournament.

Clifford Miranda increased India’s lead with a great run down the right flank, entering the box, going past his defender and putting it past the Afghan keeper in the 79th minute.

And India kept the momentum and sealed the victory just one minute later, when Jeje Lalpekhlua received a ball from the left side and slotted it home to make it 3-0 for India.

Sunil Chhetri picked up an ankle injury, while putting up Jeje’s goal and he had to be replaced by Sushil Kumar Singh.

Substitute Sushil Kumar Singh made it a perfect day for Team India and added a fifth goal to his team’s tally in the 95th minute.

India has won the SAFF Championship for a record-breaking 6th time and Indian football fans will be celebrating this day special day.

India to take on Afghanistan in SAFF Cup Final on Sunday

The defending champion and host India will take on first time entrant in the final Afghanistan in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup ? 2011 final at 6:00 p.m. in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on Sunday.

India defeated last runner up Maldives by 3-1 in the first semi final while Afghanistan defeated Nepal by 1-0 in second semi-final held on Friday evening.

Both the final entrants are from Group A and played a draw match with 1-1 in the league.

India (162nd FIFA ranked) is considering the most favourite in the tournament due to its current performance, better history and domestic environment but Afghanistan (178th FIFA ranking) has played excellent game in the tournament and scored highest goals so far.

In the first semi-final, India's star striker Sunil Chhetri's double strike and Syed Rahim Nabi?s account opening goal lead India to secure the berth in the final. Syed Nabi struck first goal for India in the 25th minute of the game after Jeje Lalpekhlua's effort to make the goal was failed by the rival goal keeper Imran Mohammed. Jeje tried to hit the ball in the net through header but Imran acrobatically saved it and match referee gave a free-hit. India's Clifford Miranda struck the free-hit that was volleyed by Nabi and ball entered in the net.

The Maldives players tried to make several moves after that but failed every time in the first half. The first half ended with India's leading score 1-0.

In the second half, the game changed completely and India dominated most of the time, but in the 14th minute of the second half, Maldives's striker Shamweel Qasim kicked the goal directly in the net and celebration began in the Maldives's bench.

But, this celebration did not continued for long time, as India got a chance of penalty stroke in the 68th minute of the game and Sunil Chhetri did no mistake and lead India 2-1.

Sunil struck again and kicked his second goal in the injury time. His 91st minute goal secured India's position in the final with great confidence. Sunil was declared 'Man of the Match' fourth time in a row.

The second semi-final was very close and Afghanistan could manage to win the match by Balal Arezo's goal struck in the 101st minute of the match in extra time. Nepal (143rd FIFA ranked) played well and gave stiff competition to below ranked Afghanistan and match ended without a goal.

A couple of 15-minute extra time was given to occur the result. Afghanistan despite fatigue and more injury managed to win the game by 1-0.

India shall take on Sri Lanka in an all important Group B game, in what could effectively prove to be a semi-final play-off between the neighbours if, as expected, Afghanistan win their tie against Bhutan.
India come into this tie on a far brighter note than Sri Lanka, having beaten Bhutan 5-0 in their previous encounter, after the disappointing draw against Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka will be kicking themselves for letting an early lead slip against the Afghans in their last encounter. The Islanders were comprehensively outplayed by Afghanistan last time out and will definitely be looking to improve on that performance when they take on the highly fancied Indian team.

India might still have to make do without the services of Samir Naik at right back. The Lankans, on the other hand, will be hoping to re-call star player Chathura Gunarathne, who only started on the bench against Afghanistan due to a bout of flu.

Savio Medeira will definitely be a much relieved man after having finally picked up his first competitive win as India’s coach but he cannot relax yet since a loss to their southern neighbours could still knock the present table-toppers out of the race for the semi-finals.
Sri Lanka coach Jang Jung however will have no option but to attack as his team need a win in order to progress.
